Electric cars, yay or nay?

Established in 2003, founders Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning wanted to prove that electric cars could be better than gas-powered vehicles. Eberhard and Tarpenning found it fit to name their electronically powered revelation after the late Nikola Tesla, the electrical engineer and inventor of the AC induction motor. The first car off the production line came out in 2008- the Tesla Roadster. Accelerating from 0 to 60 3.7 seconds, these eco-friendly beasts provide instant torque and can range up to 245 miles on one charge to its lithium battery.

Now, question IS…

Are these vehicles a much better choice for our overall needs as a society? AND are they really that eco-friendly?

Lets look at some facts….

Pros include: Quiet, quicker engine. Cheaper than the price of gas. No tailpipe=no emissions. The cost of maintenance is substantially reduced because there is no exhaust system and no oil change is needed.

Cons: There is a limited range of distance and outlets are scarce as of today (3 ‘stations’ in MN). It takes longer to ‘refuel’-approx. half a tank in a 20 minuet charge (As of this year 2016 the average top range is 200 miles). Tesla’s price range is between $70,000 to $105,000… NOT in the average person’s budget and not including the cost of battery outlet installation….

So, while the Tesla has overall good intentions, I think that the affordability of this vehicle puts its own issues in the way. If this was a vehicle made to be environmental friendly why not make it affordable so the cause goes a lot further than how much money one has in their pocket?

Fun fact: Nikola Tesla worked along side Thomas Edison. He emigrated to the US from Serbia and came to America to IMPROVE American life by designing ways to make life easier. His patents and ideas were stolen from him by multiple colleagues, he was left penniless, lost his businesses, and even lost all his work in a fire… and yet, he still triumphed over all and his ideas are still being used today.

And in any progressing world, ideas need time to become perfected to overall make its impact on the cause they are after. Thus, Tesla is attempting to make an all around affordable eco-vehicle, ranging from $30,000-$40,000. It is to be expected that by 2030 or so, that the gas-powered vehicles will soon become obsolete and electric cars will be the dawn of a new era as an attempt to better our environment.

But frankly as of today, I don’t believe that this brilliant man wished to invest his time to make something beautiful for the rest of the world, only to have a few appreciate it because they could put their best dollar forward.

Only time will tell what Tesla can stir up for a better recipe to console our economy woes, ideas are always the first step-hopefully their intentions prove to be positive and we can live and breathe a much fresher, cleaner life knowing we have made an impact in history.

Vehicle recycling- Economic provider or economic hazard?

Everything has an expiration date, so what happens to the waste? The vehicle recycling industry provides approximately 14 million tons of steel to be reused in the process of making new vehicles. The industry alone generates around 25 billion dollars per year, employing nearly 100,000 workers.

The process begins by removing the wheels, tires, battery, and catalytic converter to be scrapped for parts. Next the fluids such as the engine coolant, oil, transmission fluid, air conditioning refrigerant, and gasoline are drained and hazardous materials- mercury and sodium azide are removed. After the remainder of the shell has gone through processing which includes removal of the air conditioner evaporator, heater core, and wiring harness the carcass is then crushed or cubed.

75% of the materials can be recycled, overall saving 1.25 tons of iron ore, 1400 pounds of coal, 120 pounds of limestone, 13/14 tons of steel, and about 40,000 gallons of water. Recycling steel SAVES energy and natural resources, enough to power about 18 million households for a year!

But what is this possibly doing to our environment?

Landfills incubate pollution in the environment by contaminating the groundwater and aquifers, contaminating the soil, and producing methane into the air we breathe. (Methane is a greenhouse gas that is 21 times more powerful than carbon dioxide!) And Mercury has similar effects…

2100 pounds of mercury is collected from recycled engines- exposure has been recorded to cause symptoms such as trembling hands, numbness or tingling in the lips, tongue, fingers or toes. Higher exposures have caused impaired walking, eyesight, speech and hearing and in more sufficient quantities, methyl-mercury can be fatal because it is toxic to the nervous system — the brain and spinal cord.

Human and wildlife are endangered by these health risks and the inability to reproduce has been reported in sea creatures and bird life.

Our carbon footprints will forever effect our environment and its creatures. As a society, what can we do to protect our world and empower change?

These “Greenhouse Gases” inhabiting our environment are created by human hands and industrial production. The real controversy here is not to put people out of jobs but to better the way of production for a cleaner, healthier environment.
