Should You Get a Second Opinion Before a Big Repair?

For small repairs, a second opinion usually isn't necessary. For big-ticket recommendations, it's normal and reasonable — here's when it's worth getting one.

Should You Get a Second Opinion Before a Big Repair?

For a routine oil change or brake pads, a second opinion usually isn't necessary. For a big-ticket recommendation — a transmission, an engine, anything in the thousands of dollars — it's a reasonable and normal thing to do, and a good shop won't be offended if you ask for one.

When a second opinion is worth getting

  • The estimate is large relative to your car's value: If a repair costs a meaningful fraction of what the car is worth, it's worth confirming before committing.
  • You weren't shown the actual problem: If a shop can't or won't explain what they found in a way you can understand, or won't show you the failed part or diagnostic result, a second opinion helps confirm the diagnosis.
  • The recommendation came from a routine visit: If an oil change turned into a list of major recommended repairs, it's reasonable to have another shop confirm before authorizing significant work.
  • Something feels off: If the explanation doesn't quite add up, or the urgency seems inconsistent with how the car is actually driving, trust that instinct.

How to get a useful second opinion

Bring the original estimate or diagnostic report if you have it — a second shop can often confirm or challenge specific findings faster with that in hand than starting from scratch. Be upfront that you're seeking a second opinion; a shop confident in its own diagnostic process won't have a problem with that.
