When a second opinion is worth getting
- The estimate is large relative to your car's value: If a repair costs a meaningful fraction of what the car is worth, it's worth confirming before committing.
- You weren't shown the actual problem: If a shop can't or won't explain what they found in a way you can understand, or won't show you the failed part or diagnostic result, a second opinion helps confirm the diagnosis.
- The recommendation came from a routine visit: If an oil change turned into a list of major recommended repairs, it's reasonable to have another shop confirm before authorizing significant work.
- Something feels off: If the explanation doesn't quite add up, or the urgency seems inconsistent with how the car is actually driving, trust that instinct.
