What Causes a Car to Backfire?

A backfire is unburned fuel igniting somewhere outside the engine's combustion chambers — usually in the exhaust system, sometimes in the intake. It's a symptom of a fuel or ignition system that isn't working the way it should, not a problem on its own.

Common causes

  • Ignition misfire: Worn spark plugs or a failing ignition coil can let fuel pass through unburned, which then ignites in the hot exhaust system and produces a pop or bang.
  • Running too rich or too lean: An incorrect air-fuel mixture, often from a faulty oxygen sensor or a vacuum leak, can cause fuel to ignite at the wrong time or place.
  • Ignition timing issues: If spark timing is off, fuel can ignite too late in the combustion cycle and continue burning as it exits into the exhaust.
  • Exhaust leak: A leak in the exhaust system ahead of the muffler can let extra oxygen in, which sometimes causes a pop as unburned fuel ignites in the exhaust stream.
