Why Is My Car Shaking When I Turn It On?

A shake or vibration right when you start the car — before you've even put it in gear — usually comes from the engine itself, not the tires or suspension. That's an important distinction, because shaking at startup and shaking while driving down the road point to completely different problems.

The most common causes

• Worn or broken engine mounts: Engine mounts absorb normal engine vibration. When one wears out, that vibration transfers straight into the cabin, especially noticeable at startup and idle.
• Misfiring cylinder: Worn spark plugs, failing ignition coils, or a fouled plug can cause one cylinder to fire unevenly, creating a rough, shaking idle right after startup.
• Dirty or failing idle control: A dirty throttle body or failing idle air control valve can cause the engine to hunt for the right idle speed, producing a shake that often smooths out once RPMs stabilize.
• Vacuum leak: A cracked or loose vacuum hose lets in unmetered air, which can cause a rough, shaky idle that's most noticeable right when the engine is cold.

Startup shake vs. driving shake

If the shaking happens only at startup or idle and smooths out once you're driving, the cause is almost always engine-related — mounts, ignition, or idle control. If the vehicle shakes at highway speed instead, that's a different issue, usually tire balance, wheel alignment, or a driveline problem.
