Why Is My Car Shaking While I Drive?

A shake or vibration that shows up once you're actually driving — not just sitting at idle — points to something rotating unevenly: a tire, a wheel, a brake rotor, or a driveline component. When the shake happens and how it changes tells you which one.

What the pattern tells you

  • Gets worse the faster you go, steady at a given speed: A classic sign of an unbalanced tire or a bent/damaged wheel. Usually felt in the steering wheel if it's a front tire, or through the seat if it's a rear one.
  • Only happens when you brake: Almost always a warped brake rotor. The pulsing you feel in the pedal or steering wheel is the caliper gripping an uneven rotor surface.
  • Worse under acceleration, especially in turns: Points to a worn CV joint or axle, particularly if you also hear a clicking sound when turning.
  • Constant low grumble that gets louder with speed, sometimes with a humming or growling sound: Often a worn wheel bearing rather than a straightforward vibration.

Worth a quick safety check first

Before anything else, it's worth confirming your lug nuts are properly torqued — a loose wheel can cause a sudden, alarming shake and is a genuine safety issue, not just a maintenance one.
