Why your car heat isn't working, from low coolant and a stuck thermostat to a bad blend door actuator, and when no heat means an overheating emergency.
If the heat is not working in your car, the most common reason by far is low coolant. Your heater is a small radiator behind the dash, and it only makes heat when hot coolant is flowing through it. The other usual causes are a thermostat stuck open so the engine never reaches operating temperature, an air pocket trapped in the cooling system, a clogged heater core, a failed blend door actuator, or a weak water pump. Start by checking the coolant level in the reservoir when the engine is completely cold.
Your engine makes far more heat than it needs. Coolant carries that heat away, and a valve or a flap routes some of it through the heater core under the dash. The blower fan pushes cabin air across that core and you get warm air at the vents. That means three things have to be true: the engine has to be hot, coolant has to be reaching the heater core, and the air has to be routed across it. Almost every no-heat complaint is one of those three failing.
This is the first thing to check and the most common answer. When the coolant level drops, the heater core is often the highest point in the system, so it is the first place to lose flow. The engine can still run at a normal temperature while the heater blows cold or lukewarm.
Check the level at the overflow reservoir with the engine cold, never by opening a hot radiator cap. If it is low, coolant went somewhere. A sealed system does not consume it. Look for crusty residue at hose ends, a sweet smell, or a puddle under the car. A heater core leak often shows up as fog on the inside of the windshield and damp carpet on the passenger side.
The thermostat holds coolant in the engine until it warms up. Stuck open, coolant circulates constantly and the engine never reaches operating temperature. The symptom is unmistakable in Minnesota winter: the temperature gauge barely comes off cold, or climbs and then falls back on the highway, and the vents blow lukewarm air at best.
Drivers who never notice a stuck thermostat in July find out about it the first week of January. It is a routine repair and worth doing rather than living with, because a cold-running engine also burns more fuel and wears faster.
If the cooling system was opened recently, for a hose, water pump, or radiator, air can get trapped and collect in the heater core. The car may run at normal temperature but blow cold, and the heat may come and go depending on RPM. The fix is bleeding the system properly, which many vehicles need done in a specific sequence with a specific bleed port.
Over years, rust, scale, and degraded coolant block the narrow passages in the heater core. Flow drops and heat output goes with it. A telltale sign is a heater that works a little at highway RPM and not at all at idle. Vehicles that have gone a long time without a coolant service are the usual candidates. Sometimes a flush restores flow; sometimes the core has to be replaced, which is labor-intensive because it lives behind the dash.
The blend door decides how much air passes over the heater core before reaching the vents. A small electric actuator moves it. When that actuator strips its plastic gears or fails electrically, the door sticks and the air routing is wrong no matter what you set the temperature to.
The classic symptom is heat on one side and cold on the other in a vehicle with dual-zone climate control. Another is a clicking or tapping sound from behind the dash when you change the temperature setting. If your engine gets to full temperature and the coolant is fine but the vents stay cold, the blend door is a leading suspect.
The water pump circulates coolant. When the impeller corrodes or erodes, flow drops. You may get weak heat, temperature that swings around, or overheating under load. A pump leaking at its weep hole or making bearing noise needs attention regardless of the heat complaint.
If the heat quit and the temperature gauge is rising toward the red, or the warning light is on, that is not a comfort problem. It is an overheating engine. The same low coolant or failed pump that killed your heat is also failing to cool the engine, and continuing to drive risks a warped head or a blown head gasket.
Pull over as soon as it is safe, shut the engine off, and let it cool. Do not open the radiator cap. Have the vehicle towed rather than trying to make it a few more miles.
In a Minnesota winter, no heat is also a visibility and safety problem, because the defroster runs off the same heater core. A windshield you cannot clear is reason enough to get it fixed now rather than in April.
