How a continuously variable transmission works, its real advantages in fuel economy and smoothness, its drawbacks in feel and repair cost, and the maintenance it needs.
A CVT, or continuously variable transmission, replaces the fixed gears of a conventional automatic with a steel belt or chain running between two cone-shaped pulleys that change width, which gives it an unlimited number of ratios instead of six or eight set ones. The pros are better fuel economy, very smooth acceleration with no shift shock, and a lighter, simpler unit. The cons are a driving feel some people dislike, engine drone under hard acceleration, higher repair cost with fewer rebuild options, strict fluid requirements, and limited suitability for heavy towing.
A regular automatic has a set of gears. It picks one, holds it, then shifts to the next. A CVT has none.
Inside are two pulleys, each made of two cones facing each other, with a steel belt or chain running between them. Hydraulic pressure squeezes the cones together or lets them spread. As one pulley narrows, the belt rides higher on it and its effective diameter grows, while the other widens and shrinks. That changing ratio is what a CVT uses instead of gears, and it moves through it continuously rather than in steps.
The practical result is that the engine can sit at whatever speed is most efficient for the job while road speed catches up, instead of being dragged up and down through a gear stack.
The easiest test is a drive. Accelerate steadily from a stop on an open road and watch the tachometer. If engine speed climbs and then holds nearly flat while the car keeps gaining speed, with no distinct steps, that is a CVT. A conventional automatic will show the needle rise and fall repeatedly as it shifts.
Other clues: the owner's manual usually names it outright, sometimes under a brand name such as Xtronic, Lineartronic, or e-CVT. Many CVT-equipped cars have an L or B position on the shifter instead of numbered gears. If you are still unsure, the VIN tells a shop exactly what is in there.
Fluid, and not much else. But it matters more than it does in a conventional automatic.
Use only the fluid the manufacturer specifies. Universal or multi-vehicle fluids are a bad idea here, even when the label claims coverage. Intervals vary widely, so the owner's manual is the authority, and short trips, towing, and heavy stop-and-go traffic all shorten them. If your driving is mostly short winter hops around the west metro, treat that as severe service.
Keep the transmission cooler and its lines clean and leak-free, because heat is what kills these units. And do not sit on early symptoms.
If you mostly commute, care about fuel economy, do not tow, and will keep up with fluid service, a CVT is a reasonable and often very economical choice. If you want a car that feels connected under hard acceleration, or you tow anything meaningful, or you want cheap rebuild options at high mileage, a conventional automatic is the safer fit. It is a genuine trade-off, not a defect.
Get in soon for shuddering at light throttle, slipping, a burnt smell, a whine that rises with road speed, or a delay before the car moves when you shift into drive. Those can sometimes still be caught at the fluid stage. Stop driving and have it towed if the car will not move, revs without accelerating, or makes a loud metallic noise. Overdue fluid service is not an emergency, but do not let it slide another year.
