Grinding Noise When Turning: Causes and What to Check

What a grinding noise when turning usually means, how to tell a CV joint from a wheel bearing or power steering problem, and which causes are unsafe to drive on.

A grinding noise when turning almost always comes from one of a handful of places: a worn CV joint, a failing wheel bearing, a power steering system that is low on fluid, a bent brake dust shield rubbing the rotor, or a worn strut mount. The speed you hear it at is the biggest clue. Grinding in slow, tight turns, like pulling into a parking spot, usually points to a CV joint, the power steering pump, or a strut mount. Grinding that rises with road speed and changes as you lean the car into a curve is usually a wheel bearing.

Start With When It Happens

Two questions sort most of these cases out.

  • Does it only happen at low speed with the wheel cranked over? Think parking lots, U-turns, pulling out of a driveway. That is a steering or CV joint pattern.
  • Does it get louder the faster you go, and change when the road curves? That is a wheel bearing pattern, and turning just shifts weight onto the bad one.

Also notice whether the sound follows wheel rotation rather than engine RPM. If it tracks the wheels, the problem is out at a corner of the car, not under the hood.

CV Joints: The Most Common Cause On Front-Wheel Drive

The outer CV joints let your front wheels steer and go up and down while still delivering power. They are packed with grease and sealed inside a rubber boot. When that boot cracks, the grease slings out and road grit gets in.

The classic early symptom is a rhythmic clicking or popping in a tight turn, often louder under light acceleration. As the joint keeps wearing, that clicking turns into a coarse grinding or crunching. Clicking means a joint that is on its way out. Grinding means it is much further along.

Torn CV boots are a common find on cars that spend winters here. Road salt and cold make rubber brittle, and a boot that cracks in January can empty itself out long before you hear anything. If you can see dark grease flung around the inside of a front wheel, that is your answer.

Wheel Bearings: Grinding That Changes With Load And Speed

A failing wheel bearing usually starts as a hum or growl that grows with speed. People often describe it as wheel grinding, and it can sound like rumble strips or an aggressive tire tread.

The turning test is simple. Cornering shifts the car's weight to the outside wheels. If the noise gets worse when you steer right, the load is going onto the left side, and the left bearing is the suspect. If it gets worse steering left, look at the right side. If the sound disappears entirely in one direction, that confirms it.

Potholes and hard curb hits are hard on bearings, and so is standing water and salt brine working past a worn seal.

Power Steering: Low Fluid Or A Failing Pump

On a car with hydraulic power steering, low fluid lets the pump pull in air. That produces a groaning, whining, or grinding sound when turning the steering wheel, worst at low speed and loudest when you hold the wheel at full lock. The steering may also feel heavier or grabby.

Check the reservoir when the engine is cold. If it is low, there is a leak somewhere, because the system is sealed. Topping it off quiets the noise for a while, but the leak still needs to be found. Holding the wheel hard against the stop puts the pump under maximum load, so avoid it while you sort this out.

Many newer vehicles use electric power steering and have no pump or fluid at all. On those, a grinding or notchy feel in the column is a different repair entirely.

Brake Dust Shields And Worn Strut Mounts

Behind each brake rotor is a thin metal dust shield. A curb strike, a chunk of ice, or ordinary rust can bend it into the rotor. The result is a scraping sound that follows wheel speed and often changes when you turn, because suspension loads shift the shield. It sounds alarming and is one of the cheapest things here to fix.

Strut mounts carry a bearing that lets the strut rotate as you steer. When it wears out, you get grinding, creaking, or popping from the top of the strut tower during slow turns, sometimes with a shudder in the wheel. It is usually worse when the car is cold.

What Is Safe To Drive On And What Is Not

Some of these can wait a few days. Some should not.

  • Get it towed or stop driving: a wheel bearing that has progressed to loud grinding, any grinding paired with play or wobble in the wheel, or a CV joint that grinds and clunks under power. Bearings can seize, and a fully failed outer CV joint can leave you without drive in traffic.
  • Drive it, but get in soon: early CV joint clicking, a torn CV boot with no noise yet, or a strut mount that creaks and grinds in turns. These are wear items that get more expensive the longer they run.
  • Usually fine for a short trip: a bent dust shield scraping the rotor. Annoying, not dangerous.
  • Check the fluid first: power steering grinding or groaning. If it is low, you have a leak, and losing assist entirely while turning is worth avoiding.

When you are not sure which one you have, treat it as urgent. The dangerous failures and the cheap ones can sound very similar from the driver's seat.
