1. Rough Shaking at Startup or Idle

If the shake is strongest right when you start the car or while sitting at a stoplight, and smooths out once you're moving, the engine itself is the likely source — often a misfiring cylinder, worn spark plugs, or a failing engine mount that's no longer absorbing normal engine vibration the way it should.

2. Shimmy or Vibration at Highway Speed

A steady shake or shimmy that gets worse the faster you go, especially felt through the steering wheel, is the classic sign of an unbalanced tire, a bent wheel, or a tire with internal damage. A tire balance is usually the first thing to check — left alone, it accelerates uneven tire wear and can stress suspension components.

3. Shaking or Pulsing When You Brake

If the vibration shows up specifically when you press the brake pedal — often felt as a pulsing in the pedal itself or through the steering wheel — the most common cause is warped brake rotors. Rotors can warp from heat cycling, especially with aggressive stop-and-go driving or towing, and once they're warped, resurfacing or replacement is typically needed.

4. Shaking or Clicking When Turning

Vibration or a clicking sound that appears specifically while turning, particularly in front-wheel-drive vehicles, often points to a worn CV joint or axle. This tends to get more noticeable during sharp turns, like pulling into a driveway, and is worth having inspected before the joint fails completely.

5. Shaking Under Acceleration

If the vibration builds as you press the gas rather than at a steady speed, look at motor mounts or, in some cases, a transmission issue. Worn motor mounts let the engine shift more than it should under load, transmitting vibration into the cabin.
